Sat 10 Sep 09:30 - Horsham & District Youth Football League - Under 11 E 9v9 Full time

Flying start

So the forecast said heavy rain to arrive at some point in the morning. However, we knew with only one defeat in the league last season, a semi-final position in the cup competition and two tournament wins the Outlook was clearly bright (but not necessarily Orange, Coach Simpson was aiming for a slightly deeper hue holiday tan).

This could be subject to change given the move to Youth football. 9 a side and offside rules. Will the boys continue to shine?..

Just the 1 League match to fulfil then. All players taking a part.

MATCH SQUAD - ( ) Starting position

Harrison Fegan (GK), Fabian (LB), Oliver (CB), Tom Berg (RB), Niall (LM), Thomas M (ILM), Jamie (IRM), Matty (RM), Sam H (STK), Charlie (Come on CB), Seb (Come on RM). Indra and Harvey are unavailable due to other contractual commitments.

A light grey but amenable background greets the coaches, players, parents and supporters. The waft of grilling bacon a vague distraction.

Can the boys deliver before the storm?...

The Sussex FA Ref (Tom, great lad), gives a short peep to signal proceedings.

Well. Well. Well.

Traditionally the boys get off to a slow start at the beginning of the season, preferring their flip flops to their footie boots. The opening game was their only loss in League football last season.

Well. If this was a slow start then Concorde will have to be recommissioned to keep up with these boys.

55, 56,57 seconds...

A quick 1-2 with Jamie Simpson on the edge of the box and Thomas M blasts one into the roof of the newly purchased Heron Way net. Let's hope they've kept the receipt.

1 (ACB) - 0

The next score works from Matty as busy as a bee in midfield field putting through Thomas M who from short range chips the Heron Way GK with the outside of his right foot.

All in all a good well worked half from the boys culminating in ..

Niall the Bullet firing a corner kick in from the left and Thomas M Bosch's it low into the Heron Way goal. So the half finishes...

Not so long in the second half before Thomas M knocks in a fourth from the 6 yard box.

A change of shape ensues spreading the match time around and the boys have flashes of brilliance but to be fair to Heron Way they do test the Cougars' goal. Resolute defending from defenders Tom Berg, Oliver, Fabian and Charlie protect the keepers of Harrison, Matty and Thomas M who all give a faultless performance in front of the 7 foot high goal. All of them making saves to continue the clean sheet mentality and work ethic.

Worth mentioning is the boys grasp of the offside rule. Not sure they got caught out once. FIFA 16 carries some educational merit after all.

Anyway time ticks on and some changes to spread playing time and some different position experience leads to Oliver breaking through from midfield on the right and slots one in at 45 degrees without the aid of protractor and compass.

To be fair to Heron Way, on occasions in the last 20 minutes they exploit the space between our high pressing midfield and defence and force some chances that didn't quite fall for them. We cannot report the Sky Sports statistics on shots on target account of the SkyCam running out of double AA batteries.

Fading minutes of the game, Matty and Harrison work hard to close down a Heron Way goal kick. Matty side foots it through to Harrison who cooler than a Smeg freezer puts it inside the left post and beyond the outstretched keeper (who to be fair demonstrated a safe pair of hands throughout).

Peep - peep - peep - from Ref Tom and hands are shaken as well as the pitch of Heron Way Primary School from the thundering performance of our boys.

We are top of the league - we are top of the league (well division).

For those wishing to chart our progress you can find us at:

At this age leagues are published but the actual match results are not.

So on to our next match at home at Rydon School next Saturday (17/09) against Tournament adversaries Horsham Sparrows Blue

Thanks to our Line-O as well Scott Fegan. We will need a volunteer to run a side of the pitch every match. {Cough / wink}.

Where to now?

Who knows how the future matches will unfold but what we do know is the Coaches' commitment to develop the boys as individual players and as a team.

We also know how committed our parents and supporters are to our boys.

Perhaps Rory with his intimate relationship with Costa could foster some future sponsorship responsibilities for the team :-).

All in all.

Unbelievable Jeff.

Except with this team the unbelievable becomes reality.
