Ashington Cougars Black vs. Upper Beeding

Ashington Cougars Black vs. Upper Beeding

Cougars final league game of the season was at home to Upper Beeding . Needing a win to guarantee promotion you could sense the anticipation amongst players and parents alike.
Cougars burst into life from the start of the game playing Barca style high-pressure football, allowing the Beeding players no time to settle each time they had possession, the tactic worked and the opening minutes of the game were played predominately in the Beeding half. After 10 minutes of domination the break-through finally came when a Tommy Clarke corner was half cleared and met by Thomas Cordingley who’s shot was well saved by the Beeding keeper but Jamie Gallagher, not for the first time this season was the quickest to react and he pounced on the loose ball and tucked it away neatly to open the scoring.
Rather than resting on their laurels Cougars continued to pile on the pressure and it was no surprise when Jamie Gallagher increased the lead with another goal poachers finish. Shortly after Harry Hepburn made it 3 – 0 with an exquisite long range shot which curled into the bottom-left corner of the Beeding goal leaving the keeper no chance. Within minutes of the 3rd goal Williams Farnes had added to the scoring and Jamie Gallagher had completed a deserved hat-trick and the score was 5 – 0 to Cougars. The final ten minutes of the first half time saw Beeding show tremendous character as they started to fight their way back into the game with a spirited, never say die approach and but for some excellent defending from the ever reliable Oliver Rencontre and Sam Boyd would have earned themselves a life-line, however the first half ended with Cougars maintaining their 5 goal cushion.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first half with Cougars dominating the game from midfield and when Sam Davies and Ned Sigston combined well to create an opening for William Farnes the result was as inevitable as it had been on the previous 31 occasions William had scored this season and the lead was extended to 6 – 0. Not to be outdone Jamie Gallagher added to the scoring shortly after and then William Farnes completed a hat-trick of his own and the score was extended to 8 – 0.
Despite the game being beyond them Beeding once again showed a genuinely impressive team spirit and started to create chances of their own and deserved their consolation goal when it finally came courtesy of Joshua Bassett and but for potentially ‘save of the season’ from stand-in goal keeper Jack Evans would have scored a second goal shortly after.
However, it was Cougars who finished the game stronger and William Farnes added two further goals before the final whistle giving him 5 goals on the day and 35 for the season. The game ended 10 – 1 to Cougars securing them a deserved victory and promotion.
