Ashington Cougar U15 v Ifield Galaxy U15
Cougars penultimate game of the season was against title rivals Ifield Galaxy, with Cougars only needing a draw to keep their title challenge in their own hands, Ifield needed the win.
The day started badly with Cougars only able to field 10 players at the start of play. The numeric disadvantage showed and within 10 minutes Cougars were 2 goals behind.
However, the Cougars players attitude was better than ever and Thomas Fitzpatrick, who always seems to raise his game against Ifield, pulled a goal back with an excellent finish after bursting down the right hand side of the pitch and brushing aside the Ifield tackles. Thomas Cordingley showed equal determination and strength shortly after when stealing the ball off an Ifield defender and placing it neatly into the bottom corner of the goal to level the scores just before half time.
Just as it looked as if Cougars would enter the interval with the scores level a lucky break for Ifield saw them once again take the lead despite a gallant effort from goal-keeper Jack Evans.
The second half saw Cougars with 11 players for the first time in the match and the extra man started to show and when Ned Sigston won the ball in midfield he combined well with Toby Ralph to feed the ball to Thomas C whose finish was accomplished as ever and he levelled the scores.
The game was then evenly balanced with chances at either end, however things seemed to be going the way of Ifield and two further goals saw them extend the lead to 5 – 3 with 20 minutes remaining.
Yet again Cougars determination and never die attitude showed and you could sense they knew it was time to give all – and didn’t they just! Each player without exception gave everything and a fightback which gave everyone watching goose-bumps ensued. Thomas Fitzpatrick and Thomas C led the fight combining on four occasions resulting in four quick goals for Thomas C.
Cougars led 7 – 5 with time ticking away for Ifield (slowly, very slowly)
However, just as it looked as Cougars would take all 3 points the work and commitment they had put in started to take its toll and injury after injury left the Cougars once again down to 10 players - only 8 of which were fully fit. Ifield took advantage and pulled a goal back with 6 minutes remaining and equalised with just 2 minutes of time remaining.
The game ended 7 – 7 but it felt like a win.
A game as entertaining as any you could pay £50 to watch and commitment from the players better than many I have watched paid £250K a week to play.
