Ashington Cougars U15 v Southwater U15
Cougars final game of the season saw them in a midweek fixture away to Southwater, Cougars needed just 1 point to clinch the title.
The game started in scrappy fashion with Cougars unable to find their rhythm, not helped by a narrow, bobbly pitch. However after twenty minutes Thomas C latched onto a through ball from midfield and placed it tidily into the goal to give Cougars a fortunate lead.
Though not playing especially well Cougars did at least seem unlikely to concede until a speculative long ranged shot from Southwater found its way into the net and draw the scores level. The game continued to be scrappy with neither team looking like troubling the score further until 2 minutes before half time a deflected shot from a tight angle found its way into the Cougars goal.
At half time Cougars found themselves 2 – 1 behind – GULP!
The second half saw Cougars start better than they ended the first but still were not firing on a cylinders and it was difficult to see where a goal was coming from. However, not for the first time this season when Cougars need someone to produce something a little bit special it was Jamie Gallagher who quite literally rose to the occasion with a gazelle like leap, towering above the Southwater defenders and heading the ball into the goal to draw the scores level at 2 – 2.
With 25 minutes remaining Thomas C then put Cougars back in front after great work from William Farnes and it finally looked as if Cougars had secured the point(s) they needed . Southwater however had different ideas and some sloppy defending left them with a half chance which was finished well and the scores were once again level at 3 – 3.
Stick or twist was the debate – a debate which Thomas C answered as he knuckled down and smashed in two further goals to extend the lead to 5 -3 making his tally for the day to 4 goals (and 9 in two games).
Toby Ralph killed the game of completely with a carbon copy of Jamies earlier goal and with 5 minutes left on the clock and the score at 6 - 3 the game and title were won despite a further late goal from Southwater.
The game ended 6 – 4 to Cougars – CHAMPIONS!!
