Copthine Youth U15 v Ashington Cougars U15
Last time Cougars and Copthorne met it was a one sided affair in favour of Cougars, the opening 10 minutes suggested it would be no different on this occasion as Cougars created three clear chances in the opening ten minutes, however not for the first time this season Cougars didn’t take advantage and were the first to concede as Copthorne made the most of a mix up in the Cougars defence.
The goal did seem to shake Cougars but they still looked the stronger team going forward and the more likely to score with Ned Sigston unlucky to have a goal disallowed for off-side and William Farnes equally unlucky to fall victim to the same fate as he was about to place the ball into the net.
Despite ‘things’ going against them Cougars persistence paid off and when William Farnes met a Toby Ralph cross on the back post he levelled the scores.
However it wasn’t long before Cougars once again hit the self-destruct button gifting Copthorne a second goal and with the first half drawing to a close it looked as if they’d go into the break a goal behind. However, they gave one final push for an equalising goal and when Thomas C met a perfectly weighted pass from midfield he outpaced the defenders and placed the ball tidily into the bottom corner of the goal to level the score at the break.
The second half was evenly matched for the opening 20 minutes and neither team looked like scoring until Copthorne were awarded a free kick just wide of the 18 yards box which initially was half cleared but fell kindly to a Copthorne player who finished well and Cougars were once again a goal behind.
Cougars initial response was one of 100% effort but a lack of discipline and they lost their shape, but with ten minutes remaining it was Thomas Cordingley who gave them a life-line with a now trade mark goal, bursting through the Copthorne defence and smashing the ball into the goal. With shape and discipline restored a glorious through ball from ‘mom’ Jamie Gallagher was met by Toby Ralph who showed a cool head in front of goal when wrong footing the last defender and placing the ball beyond the keeper and into the goal giving Cougars a hard fought 4 – 3 win….Phew!
