Ashington Cougars U15 v Horsham Tigers U15
New to the HDYFL Horsham Tigers were an unknown entity, their previous results suggested they are a fast improving team and would give Cougars a difficult game.
It was evident from the start of the match that Cougars would have to work hard to break down the Tigers defence who proved to be strong, fast and well organised and despite having the upper hand in the early exchanges it was Tigers who opened the scoring.
Cougars seemed undeterred and continued to look the stronger side and the game was played predominately in the Tigers half. The pressure reaped its reward when Cougars won a corner and a Jack Evans cross was met by William Farnes who drove the ball into the goal to draw the scores level. With their tails up Cougars pounded the Tigers goal and when Thomas C and Jamie Gallagher combined well with some intricate passing to dissect the Tigers defence Thomas finished well when through on goal.
However Tigers then started to look stronger moving forward than at any point previously during the game and despite some excellent goal-keeping from Connor Lord on 3 occasions it was no surprise when Tigers drew the scores level - Cougars twice failing to clear the ball inside their 18 yard box. The Ashington boys response was as impressive as ever and when Thomas C created a chance for William Farnes he kept a cool head in front of goal and finished well for his 2nd goal of the game and at the break the score was 3 – 2 to Cougars.
The first ten minutes after the break saw the teams evenly match but as the half progressed Cougars started to dominate once more, coming close on several occasions, however they were unable to extend their lead until the ball fell to Jamie Gallagher just inside the Tigers 18 yards box and the conclusion was as inevitable as ever when Jamie has a sniff of the goal and the score was extended to 4 – 2 with 25 minutes remaining.
Tigers now seemed demoralised and spaces appeared in their half of the pitch for the first time in the match which was the cue for MoM Thomas C to finish the game with 3 further goals, each as impressive as the one before bringing his total for the day to 4..
The game ended 7 – 2 to Cougars.
