Ashington Cougars U15 v East Grinstead Meads U15

Ashington Cougars U15 v East Grinstead Meads U15

Cougars second league game of the season saw them on the road away to East Grinstead. On the previous three meetings between the teams Cougars had got the upper hand and were confident, possibly over-confident of continuing their winning run. However the game started in scrappy fashion and Grinstead probably edged the first 20 minutes and if not for an accomplished save from Connor Lord when diving to his right to block a close range header Cougars would have found themselves a goal behind.
The scare seemed to give the Cougar players the wake-up call they needed and they started to gain the lions share of possession and came close with long range shots from Toby Ralph and Thomas Fitzpatrick. The break-through finally came when a perfectly weighted through ball from Toby Ralph was met by the ever reliable Jamie Gallagher who placed the ball perfectly into the bottom right corner of Grinsteads goal, moment later Thomas Fitzpatrick was unlucky not to score when hitting the post from a difficult angle.
The much needed second goal finally came when just before the half-time break Cougars earned themselves a free-kick on the half way line, captain Samuel Davies whipped a perfectly angled and weighted ball over the Grinstead defensive line into the path of Toby Ralph who hit the ball first time with a crisp and decisive finish to get himself a well deserved goal.
The second half continued as the first half had ended, Cougars looking the most likely to score with William Farnes and Jamie Gallagher both coming close, however the score remained 2 – 0 until Thomas Cordingley won the ball in his own half and burst through the Grinstead midfield and then defence with power, pace, aggression and determination and when through on goal blasted the ball into the Grinstead net (better than Ryan Giggs v Arsenal 1999?)
With the game drawing to a close it seemed it would end 3 – 0 but when Ned Sigston picked up the ball on the right wing he outpaced the last defender and crossed into the path of Jamie Gallagher who as expected tucked the ball neatly into the goal and the score was 4 – 0 and the match won.
Grinstead scored a late consolation goal but it was Cougars who came away with a 4 – 1 victory and all three points.
