East Grinstead Meads Inter U13 vs. Ashington Cougars Black U13
Cougars and East Grinstead have found a recent run of form and the confidence of both teams showed from the opening whistle. It was East Grinstead who just edged the first few exchanges but a now competent Cougars defence of Alex MacPherson, Jack Evans, Oliver Rencontre and Sam Davies looked impenetrable. It was Cougars who created the first clear chance when Jamie Gallagher’s persistent haranguing of the Grinstead defence paid dividends when he stole the ball from the defender giving himself a shot on goal , only to see his effort bounce off the inside of the post and fall kindly into the keepers hands. Cougars again came close shortly after when Thomas Fitzpatrick shot from distance and forced the Grinstead keeper into a good save. A battle of attrition then ensued and it looked as if the teams would go into half time level, until Cougars were awarded a free kick and Oliver Rencontre shot with power forcing the keeper to spill the ball and it was Jamie Gallagher who was quickest to react and placed the ball neatly into the corner of the Grinstead goal.
An early corner after the restart saw a momentary lapse in concentration from the Cougars which resulted in the ball bouncing loose in their penalty area and a close range shot left the debutant keeper Ugurcan Elmasoglu no chance and the scores were level.
The remainder of the game was tightly fought but Cougars dug deep and nearly stole the points in the last few moments of the game when Jamie Gallagher combined well with Thomas Fitzpatrick and a low hard hit shot went just wide of the post.
Points of note Jamie Gallagher averages a goal a game this season - better than Ronaldo!
