Ashington Cougars U13 Black v Worthing Minors Green

Cougars final friendly of the season saw them host Worthing Minors Green who play in the ACYFL on Sundays so were an unknown quantity.
From the start of the match it was evident that the teams were evenly matched and Cougars would have to work hard to continue their unbeaten run. However, as the game started to take shape Cougars new signings started to gel and quickly develop understanding within the team Cougars started to gain the upper hand and but for some excellent goal-keeping from The Minors keeper would have taken the lead.
However, the pressure finally reaped it reward when after 15 minutes Will Farnes and Thomas Fitzpatrick combined well to give Jamie Gallagher a chance which he finished with his usual quality when placing the ball tidily into the corner of the goal. Cougars confidence then grew and the newly formed midfield partnership of Jamie Gallagher and Cavan Sopp showed the potential it had promised in training as their tough tackling helped boss the centre of the park - rarely allowing the ball to pass into the Cougars half. However, Minors showed great spirit and defended resolutely and at half time the score remained 1 – 0 to Cougars.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first with both teams creating half chances which they were unable to finish until Minors broke down the left and some excellent quick fire passing saw them with a chance on goal which was finished in style giving Cougars keeper Connor Lord no chance.
Once again it was Cougars never -die attitude which impressed and the pressure and chances once again started to come. Excellent efforts from Thomas Fitzpatrick and Cavan Sopp forced the Minors keeper in to two excellent saves but it was Will Farnes who finally got the break- through for Cougars when scoring a well deserved goal to once again put Cougars ahead when combining well with Ned Sigston.
Moments later great work from Harry Hepburn and Thomas Cordingley created a chance for Ned Sigston who volleyed the ball into the top corner of the Minors goal extending the lead to 3 – 1 giving his team a much needed two goal cushion.
The remainder of the game saw Minors throw players forward and the pace of Oliver Rencontre and Alex Macpherson once against showed its value as they dealt with several long passes over the Cougars defensive line. The game ended 3-1 to Cougars extending their unbeaten run to eight games.
