Ifield Galaxy vs. Ashington Cougars Black

Ifield Galaxy vs. Ashington Cougars Black

Cougars penultimate league game of the season saw them away to Ifield in a top of the table clash. A late change to the smaller of the two pitches available led to a delayed kick-off adding to the already mounting tension.
It was Cougars however who seemed the more focussed from kick-off and they dominated possession and it was no surprise the first chance of the game fell to Cougars when Thomas Charlwood weighted an excellent through ball which William Farnes met with a perfectly timed run only to find himself unlucky not to be awarded a free kick when through on goal, however he still managing to get a shot away and the ball whistled marginally over the Ifield cross-bar. The game continued to be played predominately in the Ifield half and when Thomas Charlwood and William Farnes combined with a carbon copy of the earlier move William this time shrugged off the unwelcome attentions of the Ifield defenders and finished with a perfectly place shot to open the scoring and give Cougars a deserved lead.
Cougars started to look comfortable and came close with several half chances and Thomas Fitzpatrick found the back of the net after challenging the keeper to a 50/50 ball only to have the goal disallowed with the keeper deemed to have both hands on the ball.
With the first half coming to end the balance of play started to shift and Ifield began to threaten the Cougars goal and but for some tough and well time tackles from Oliver Rencontre and Jack Evans could have easily drawn level. When the equalising goal did finally come it was from the penalty spot after a shot hit a Cougar players hand from close range. Shortly after and with their tails up Ifield took the lead just before half time when a speculative cross found its way to an Ifield player leaving him with an easy chance to score and the first half ended with Cougars unfortunate to be trailing 2-1.
The second half took no time to get into its stride and the game was evenly balanced with chances at either end. It was however Cougars who were the more disciplined and focussed their attentions on scoring the much needed equalising goal with each player giving 100%. The discipline and hard work paid off and when William Farnes met a cross from the right wing he found himself through on goal and with only one likely conclusion he once again found the back of the Ifield net to draw the scores level with his 2nd goal of the game and 30th of the season.
With Ifield clearly rattled and lacking discipline Cougars once again started to dominate and Thomas Cordingley showed power, strength and determination when bundling the ball into the Ifield goal to once again give Cougars the lead and a potential winner.
However with only a few minutes remaining Ifield gave one last push and forced a great save from Cavan Sopp and then block from the Cougars defence, but the rebound fell kindly to the Ifield striker who managed to squeeze his shot just inside the Cougars cross bar and into the goal.
With the draw being a satisfactory result for both teams the last few moments past without event, each team unwilling to risk defeat and the game ended 3 – 3.
