East Grinstead Meads Inter U14 vs. Ashington Cougars Black U14

East Grinstead Meads Inter U14 vs. Ashington Cougars Black U14

Aware they would be facing their toughest league game of the season to date the Cougars team arrived focused on the task ahead.
A tentative start from both teams meant it was an evenly matched first 15 minutes with neither team looking dangerous, largely due to some excellent defending by Samuel Davies winning him the plaudits of both coaches.
However as the game started to take shape it was Cougars who looked the stronger team, with Thomas Fitzpatrick, Jamie Gallagher and William Farnes each having a decent strike on goal.
It was clear East Grinstead were aware of the prolific start William Farnes has had to his revitalised Cougars career, they had adopted the approach of ‘doubling up’ on him each time he received the ball in the final third of the pitch, however Cougars turned this to their advantage and utilised the additional space this created, and when Ned Sigston found himself with room on the right hand side of the pitch he showed pace and determination to power passed the final East Grinstead defender, cross the ball to Harry Hepburn who was seemingly going to open the scoring but Harry found himself unlucky to be flagged off-side. The first half ended 0 – 0, but the balance of play had definitely tipped in Cougars favour.
The second half started with Cougars asserting their domination and but for two solid saves from the East Grinstead keeper would have taken the lead. When the break-through finally did come it was unsurprising that it was William Farnes who scored with a now trade mark goal, taking the ball passed the first defender and cutting across the second leaving him unable to make a challenge and Will clean through on goal, where he duly blasted the ball into the East Grinstead net.
East Grinstead have proven themselves to be the come- back kings in previous fixtures this season but Cougars halted any signs of a come-back before they got started, when Thomas Fitzpatrick (who didn’t seem to lose a tackle all game) won a ball he had no right to win, passed to William Farnes who from a tight angle found the net once more, doubling the lead.
Shortly after Ned Sigston went on another powerful solo jaunt into the East Grinstead area and finished with an exquisite lob over the keeper extending the lead further. East Grinsteads frustration then started to show and some physical challenges left Cougars with only 9 fully fit players on the pitch so it was a relief when Jamie Gallagher, not for the first time was the quickest to react to a loose ball around the East Grinstead penalty spot and somehow manage to sneak the ball into the goal - extending the lead to 4 – 0 and the game beyond the home team.
The last ten minutes passed without event with Oliver Rencontre looking assured as ever when East Grinstead pushed for a consolation goal. The game finished 0 – 4.
